Research Scientist, Molecular Biology



About the Opportunity

The Research Scientist will be responsible for applying the tools of molecular biology to accelerate traditional plant breeding. This role will work together with a small creative team to design and conduct research.  Responsibilities include discovery and application work, potential supervision of technical staff, management and maintenance of laboratory equipment including robots and sequencers. This role will also plan and assure completion of complex projects involving cross-functional teams, and stay current with the newest molecular techniques that would aid Driscoll’s in accomplishing our mission.

Responsibilities

Research: 
·       Assist in the planning, management, and implementation of complex research projects involving interdisciplinary teams.
·       Assist in deployment of marker-assisted selection assays and in DNA fingerprinting across the four Driscoll’s crops. 
·       Assist in the development and application of molecular technology in pathogen detection.  Manage and maintain laboratory equipment such as robots and sequencers.
Supervision:
·       Supervise technical staff to assist in the research efforts as needed.
·       Support and promote safety. 
·       Develop, train, and evaluate performance of employees on a continuous basis.
Collaboration/Communication: 
·       Establish collaborative relationships with other researchers in the field through attendance of conferences and symposia. 
·       Occasional travel to locations in the European Union will be required.
General:
·       Follow Company policies and practices while representing Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, governmental agencies, growers, customers, etc. 
·       Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

·       Ph.D. or Master’s degree with strong work experience in molecular biology, genetics, or a related field. Individuals with experience outside of the plant sciences are also encouraged to apply.
·       Experience in Bioinformatics is highly desired.
·       Experience with second generation sequencing library preparation highly desired.
·       Experience planning complex projects involving cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams.
·       Experience with laboratory automation and sequencer operation highly desired.
·       A background in quantitative genetics desired.
·       Individual must possess the ability to develop strong trust in all working relationships.
·       Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a cross-functional team environment.
·       Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation.
·       Some travel will be required. 
·       A California driver’s license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program are also required.
·       Passport and the ability to travel internationally without restrictions is also required.
