We seek a dynamic, energetic and imaginative scientist to contribute to a major new research focus in Cardiovascular Genetics/Genomics within the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. The Institute is in the process of making a series of academic appointments to develop Cardiovascular Genetics, of which the present post is one. Cardiovascular Sciences has been identified as one of six areas of research strength and priority within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at The University of Manchester
Genome-wide association studies and next-generation sequencing studies have provided an unprecedented number of novel insights into genetic factors predisposing to a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Through understanding the new biology revealed by such studies, this post will offer a unique opportunity for the successful applicant to make discoveries that will facilitate the development of novel treatments for patients with heart and circulatory diseases. You will lead your own research team focused on an aspect of cardiovascular genetics/genomics while working in alignment with the overall research goals of the Cardiovascular Genetics group led by Professor Bernard Keavney. You will have a track record of excellent relevant publications and of winning external peer reviewed grant funding.
Our Institute has internationally competitive groups in cardiac electrophysiology, animal modelling of heart failure, vascular biology and experimental medicine. These, together with the strength in genetics within our Institute and more broadly within the Faculty provide the highly interdisciplinary environment required for successful and comprehensive functional investigation of genetic variants. The Institute hosts two British Heart Foundation (BHF) Chairs and a BHF four-year PhD Programme.
In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of this field, we are happy to consider applications from suitably qualified investigators with expertise in molecular biology, bioinformatics, mammalian genetics or stem cell biology, with the proviso that the principal scientific direction will be functional cardiovascular genetics/genomics.
Informal enquiries: Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Bernard Keavney: Email: bernard.keavney@manchester.ac.uk
