Description
· Independently performs bioinformatics data analyses for NGS and other applications, including database querying, sequence alignment/assembly, analysis of genetic variations, phylogenetic and comparative genomic analysis, optionally pattern recognition and machine learning.
· For all cases below, elicits customer requirements and exercises judgment in implementation, consistent with customer needs; also, coaches staff and provides QC of deliverables.
· Implements and evaluates under new analytical methods on internally and externally generated data.
· Develops new data interpretation and extraction methods applicable to NGS and PCR platforms.
· Develops, tests, and deploys web applications, especially for data access, management, and custom analyses (requires proficiency in Perl or Python, SQL, HTML, XML in UNIX/Linux environment and optionally C/C++ or Java).
· Understands bioinformatics tools used in research, including sequence analysis programs, web applications, and open source RUO tools, and is capable of using these tools supporting internal R&D projects.
· Supports data management and data access solutions.
· Capable of rapidly developing scripts and simple databases to support research studies. Able to retrieve data from public sources and integrate with internal data.
· Develops and supports RUO tools, provides data management solutions, and analyzes data.
· Has expertise in own discipline. Applies expertise to set direction and resolve problems.
· Positions with people management responsibility have full HR responsibility for direct and indirect reports which includes hiring/firing decisions, interviewing, selection, performance feedback, discipline, pay decisions and handling employee grievances/complaints.
· Works on complex problems requiring significant analysis and evaluation of intangible variables; may refer to established precedents and policies.
· Frequent contact with external resources and contacts at various management levels concerning operations or scheduling of specific phases of projects.
· Provides input to budget and helps to allocate expenditures efficiently for activities individual manages. Forecasts resource needs. Identifies opportunies to reduce costs.
· Sets goals that have short-term (0-3) years positive impact on team members and the organization.
Qualifications
· MS and typically 8 -11 years related experience
· PhD and typically 4 to 8 years related experience
· Proficiency with Perl or Python, SQL, HTML, XML in UNIX/Linux environment and optionally C/C++ or Java
