Zoltan Kutalik shares the 2013 Leenaards Award for the promotion of scientific research

This year, the Leenaards Foundation awards two projects in translational biomedical research. One of them will suppport Zoltan Kutalik, from the Computational Biology group at SIB and UNIL, Pierre-Yves Bochud (UNIL-CHUV), Christian Van Gelden (HUG and UNIGE) and Oscar Marchetti (UNIL-CHUV) who will combine their expertise to find new approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections.

Fungal infections are frequent life-threatening complications in the hospital setting. Candida is by far the predominant fungus and belongs to the top ten bloodstream pathogens in Swiss hospitals. Despite major advances in antifungal therapeutics, the early diagnosis and management of Candida infections remains a major challenge. New, rapid, sensitive and specific laboratory tools are thus needed for early identification of individuals exposed to multiple risk factors for prevention and those with on-going infection requiring prompt antifungal therapy.

The objective of the project is to conduct a large, prospective, multicenter case-control study with a comprehensive collection of clinical, microbiological and biological data. Using computational methods, the research team will compare the genome (DNA) of 300 candidemic patients to those of 600 matched controls in order to identify genomic regions associated with different candidemia susceptibility. This project is believed to yield potential clinical applications for individualized prevention as well as early diagnosis followed by prompt antifungal therapy.

This study will be performed by a multidisciplinary consortium of investigators in the field of fungal infections, statistical genetic, and bioinformatics. This close link between basic and clinical science is optimally suited for the successful realization of this ambitious translational research project.
