Please read this page carefully before applying.

Application information

Candidates who have or who will soon obtain a Master's degree or diploma in bioinformatics, scientific computing, mathematics, physics, computer science, or biology are eligible to apply for the PhD Program. Students with a degree in mathematics, computer science and physics are expected to have the relevant biological background, whereas students with a degree in biology are expected to show profound knowledge in mathematics and computer science.

Students with a Bachelor's degree who have the necessary background in bioinformatics or scientific computing can apply for the Preparatory Program. You should only apply for one of the programs, i.e. tick one box on the application form. Do not send two applications. If the selection committee feels you have applied for the wrong program, you will still be considered for the other one.

Prior to registering and applying online, you have to prepare the following documents in PDF format:
  • Your degree certificate if available
  • academic transcripts / certificates of relevant examinations and a
  • 2-page research proposal. A research proposal is not a letter of motivation, or a personal statement. It should describe a potential research project you might like to carry out.
You must also have two academic referees who are willing to provide references to evaluate your academic experience. The reference letter shall include the name and the address (postal, email), the phone number and the academic position of the referee. They should email their letters of reference to kelleher@molgen.mpg.de before the application deadline.
Optionally, you may provide a proof of proficiency in English like the results of a GRE or TOEFL exam. Alternatively, note other indications of your level of English in the application form, for example if you have received your third-level education through English.
All submitted documents must be in English or in German and in pdf format.

Next steps

After the deadline on 24th of February, 2013, applications will be reviewed by faculty members and a shortlist of candidates will be invited for admission assessment, where they will be asked to give short talks and meet with potential supervisors. You can expect to hear about the outcome of your application in March 2013.
