Bioinformatics Scientist and a Bacterial Microbiologist (f/m)

Job Offer from February 21, 2013
Funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, the Department of Plant-Microbe Interactions at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist and a Bacterial Microbiologist to develop a research program on comparative genomics, metagenomics and functional analysis of the bacterial root microbiota. Following the recent characterization of the Arabidopsis root microbiota (Bulgarelli et al., Nature 2012, Bulgarelli et al., Ann. Rev. Plant Biol. 2013) we have established collections of pure bacterial strains of many microbiota members. We use synthetic communities and gnotobiotic plants to test emerging evidence that the microbiota provides indirect pathogen protection and functions in the acquisition of nutrients from soil for plant growth.

Your profile

We seek candidates with a PhD and an outstanding/internationally competitive record of research accomplishments in bioinformatics, computer science or bacterial microbiology and biochemistry. Payment and benefits are according to German TVÖD 13 scale. The positions will be initially for two years, but can be extended for up to five years.
The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) is one of the world’s premier sites committed to basic research and training in plant science. The institute has four science departments, three independent research groups and specialist support, totaling ~ 400 staff including externally funded positions.
The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
