On behalf of the FP7 project Marine Genomics for Users (MG4U), 11 participants from 10 different European countries were invited to Bremen, Germany and taught a full week of bioinformatics basics and (meta)genome annotation. The course was supported by two partners of the FP7 project Micro B3, the Microbial Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Group of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen and Ribocon, a professional bioinformatics service provider. A three-day introduction to fundamental sequence analysis, ranging from databases to pairwise and multiple sequence alignments was followed by a two-day session offering first insights into the annotation of microbial (meta)genomes. The workshop also included an excursion to the historic city centre of Bremen combined with having some typical food of the region to also promote social and professional networking.
