BioGRID 3.2 – Now Live
The BioGRID was updated today to our newest release designated BioGRID 3.2. This update includes several bug fixes and user interface improvements as well as some new features. The following is a short list of some of the changes:
  • Support for Post Translational Modifications. Our result pages may now include listings of post translational modifications. If available, these will be accessible via the “PTM Sites” link in the “Switch View” section of our interaction summaries. Examples: CLA4, CDC28, and SWI4. This feature already includes more than 20,000 PTM sites and downloadable files containing all sites will be made available soon.
  • Graphical Viewer. Our search result pages now include a built in graphical viewer. This feature can be accessed by clicking the “Visualize Interactions Graphically” button on any result page.
  • Gene Tags. For a given result page, we’ve incorporated gene tags that may contain additional annotation. For instance, genes with new post translational modification data might have a red [P] tag that indicates the existence of phosphorylation sites. Simply mouse over the gene tag for more information. This feature will be greatly expanded in future updates. For a listing of our current tags, visit our wiki.
  • Graphical User Interface Updates. We’ve made several user interface updates to improve the functionality of the BioGRID and to reduce page load times.
  • Search Improvements. We’ve made several enhancements to improve the speed and accuracy of our search results.
  • Compatibility improvements for download files. We’ve fixed several issues with our download files to improve compatibility with standards.
  • Updated Wiki Documentation. We’ve updated several pages in our Wiki to provide updated documentation on a variety of topics.
These are just some of the many improvements now available in BioGRID 3.2. We have many additional features already under development for version 3.3 that will expand on this functionality and ensure the BioGRID remains a useful resource for the biological community. If you have any questions about this build or suggestions for future builds, please feel free to contact us at biogridadmin@gmail.com.

It takes three gigabytes of computer memory to store the three billion bases that make up the human genome. That is the example that Rochester Institute of Technology alumnus Vishal Thovarai offers to illustrate the magnitude of data that modern scientists deal with.
Vishal Thovarai is a bioinformatics engineer.
As a bioinformatics engineer, Thovarai helps process data gained through DNA sequencing, the method by which scientists determine the order of the chemical building blocks that make up DNA.
After receiving his master’s degree in bioinformatics from RIT this year, Thovarai was hired by the J. Craig Venter Institute, widely considered a leader in genomic research.
“Sequencing technology is evolving so rapidly,” he said. “Now that we have the techniques, we are trying to sequence everything possible … But it’s hard to keep up. We need the capability to store and manipulate large amounts of data.”
Thovarai is one of three RIT graduates who have been hired at the J. Craig Venter Institute, which published the first diploid human genome, or genome of an individual. The institute’s global ocean sampling expedition has uncovered more than 20 million new genes and thousands of new protein families from organisms found in sea water.
“They are doing fantasy stuff,” said Gary Skuse, RIT’s interim head of the School of Biological and Medical Sciences and former head of the bioinformatics program. “It’s just incredible.”
For now, most graduates of the bioinformatics program must leave the Rochester area to find work. Skuse believes that in the future, bioinformatics skills will eventually become necessary for anyone working in biotechnology.
